“It is better to know how to learn than to know.”

Do you agree?

School exams are not quite anyone’s favourite but yet, every student can never ever escape them. The moment your child enters primary school, they will be assessed continuously till the day they finally graduate from school and enter the workforce. But then again, one is being assessed even at work too. So this is indeed a continuous and never-ending process.

So as much as we would love to say that we should not stress our kids too much with education, tuitions and whatnots, we can’t.

Would we prefer it better if our kid is always left behind in class or is unable to perform reasonably well for his/her exams? Would you not want to maximize your kid’s potential?

What then can we do as parents?

We have to get our kids used to this whole idea of being assessed constantly, I guess?

The syllabus keeps changing. The kids’ homework keeps getting tougher. Not all parents will be able to assist their kids, and this is especially worrying if their kids need help in their studies.

This is the reason why most parents feel the need for…

Private home tutors.

Almost everyone grew up with this. Well, at least I did.

When I was studying for my O levels and then my promotional exams in junior college, I remember my mum engaging private home tutors for me. It was really about convenience at that time because I did not quite enjoy going out to travel for tuition. I wanted to have tuition at the comfort of my own home, inside my room.

But some of the tutors my mother engaged for me were pretty scary. There was one female one who taught me Literature. She was one pretty tutor who was studying Law at NUS at that point, and I remember she joined the New Paper Face too. But each time I had tuition with her, all she did was to ask me to do written work while she flipped through magazines like Cleo. And then she would say, “Go on, carry on. Just keep on writing.”

OMG-3

So it made me wonder whether I could actually just save my mum’s money and do those written work without that tutor’s presence. Needless to say, I told my mum about her and we did not see her anymore.

Another tutor who taught me Economics was so old and forgetful. Whatever he taught me, I did not understand. Whatever I asked him, he was just as clueless.

He would then tell me to let him think about the questions that I asked, and told me to revise more so that I would understand the subject better.

 OMG-1

Enough said.

These days, ANYONE can be a private home tutor. But if you really care about quality like I do, then you will agree that it is important to find private home tutors who are equipped with proper teaching methods as well as lesson plans and the materials needed to teach.

MOE/NIE trained tutors are costly but they are also popular. Popular means it is more often than not quite impossible to find them.

TUTATE IS WHERE I WILL GO TO LOOK FOR A PRIVATE HOME TUTOR.

Tutors from Tutate are “Tutate-Trained” to understand the latest MOE curriculum and come equipped with student management skills, and also teach using structured lesson plans developed by educators as opposed to non-trained private tutors. Unlike any undergraduate teachers or part time tutors, the tutors will be given proper lesson plans, teaching resources and curriculum content from Singapore publishers. Lessons will be taught using a mix of technology (interactive and fun Tutate iPad app, Tutate’s website) and pen and paper.
