Live Well. Laugh Often. Love Much.

Save it!

“Good morning Mummy, we want to shower!”

exclaimed my twins Mysha and Myreen.

Time check: 9 am

So while the girls were showering, I cleared some of my pending chores. Like packing of orders. Like making the bed. Like cleaning the room.

Time check: 10.15 am

I suddenly remembered that the twins were still in the bathroom.

I went to the bathroom and checked on them. They were still in the shower, giggling away and chitchatting about their classmates. When they saw me, they chuckled and continued chitchatting.

“Excuse me, you can continue chitchatting later! How can you take this long to shower? You need to help me and daddy save water so that we do not have pay a lot for the water bill.”

And they disappeared from the bathroom almost immediately.

WATER CONSERVATION (click, click, click!) is something that kids need more exposure to. I do not exactly blame them for not realizing how precious water is. And to nag at them for not saving water is not exactly a good idea either.

Good habits do not form overnight. One thing for sure, you need to set a good example for them. You cannot possibly expect them to shower for less than 5 minutes every time while you take your own sweet time in the shower, for instance.

One good way is to make them realize the importance of water conservation is by listening to Ah Gong.

Not my Ah Gong.

Not yours also.

Thank you Ah Gong. When I was a child, I thought that the water that came out from the tap and shower was free, just like water from the lakes and sea. The only difference was, the water from homes was clean. Yah.

I did not know that small adjustments could have a big impact.

What are some water saving tips that you can think of?

I can think of a few!

  1. Wash vegetables and salads in a bowl rather than under a running tap.

  1. Run the washing machine only on a full load.

  1. Wash your car with a bucket and sponge.

  1. Collect rinse water from the washing machine and use it to flush the toilet or mop the floor.

  1. Turn off taps tightly to ensure they do not drip.

  1. Do not leave the tap running when you are brushing your teeth.

  1. Insert thimbles or water saving devices at taps with high flow rate.

  1. Monitor your water bill to monitor your family’s water consumption. If your consumption is more than average, re-look your family’s water usage habits.

  1. If you nominated for the ice bucket challenge, accept it, video yourself and then make the decision to save all the water inside the bucket instead of torturing yourself with it. You will be labeled as a hero thereafter. You can thank me later once you make it big.

Lastly, according to Mysha,

“Do not cry all the time, Myreen Nadya! Must save water.”

Small adjustments can have a big impact.

Here are some ways you can challenge yourself and make that drastic change in your water bill!

Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes.

You will save up to 1,000 gallons a month!

Put a barrel outdoor to catch rain water, then use that water for things like watering plants or flushing toilets.

You will save hundreds of gallons of water a year.

Shower together with your spouse all the time!

This one, I am sure you all can do easily, right?

You cheeky monkeys.
