Live Well. Laugh Often. Love Much.

Maid of Heart.

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

Working adults, would you agree with me if I were to say that part of the reason why you stick to your current job and give it your best is because of your employer? Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn’t you feel like leaving your job if you had a monster as an employer? And then, there are some of you who really love your job. But at the same time, you have such a hard time staying productive and motivated because you simply hate your moronic boss.

Now, try to put yourself in your helper’s shoes because guess what?

THEY TOO FEEL THE SAME WAY LIKE YOU DO, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!

WHAT? You mean they don’t look like humans to you?

In fact, they have it worse because unlike most of you who can apply for leave or take MC on days when you do not feel like working, your helper has no choice but to work 24/7 for two years straight. If your helper gets the time off once a week, good for her.

But hey, I am quite a partial person on most days.

If monster employers exist, so do monster employees…

AND HELPERS!

There are many, many ways to classify them helpers, actually. So I am going to do just that for this post, and offer you a solution to each. Disclaimer: I am no expert when it comes to this, but I am just sharing based on what I have experienced this far as an employer.  In case you do not know, we have just gotten another helper on top of the current helper we have at home. My helpers are doing great so far, and I do think that part of the reason why they are motivated to give their best on most days is because they are treated reasonably well, if not very well by everyone in the family.

READY FOR SOME FUN?

 DO-1

Description: You will usually experience this each time you get a new helper. The problem is they do not have (or pretend not to have) the skills or knowledge needed to execute the job well.  Most of them actually do not know (or pretend not to know) what is expected of them. After all, different employer has different expectations and priorities in the household.  Do not be too ridiculous; you cannot possibly expect them to automatically know what you want from them. Everything also must teach and train. Everything also don’t know.

Action: Teach them the standards, demonstrate to them the skills, and give them a few days to practise. This also means that you must be tolerant when they make mistakes during their orientation period.  Most importantly, you must give them feedback. If they do something wrong, correct them. If they do something right, reinforce.

 DO-2

Description: They are inconsistent from day to day. One day, they are tip-top, the next day, they are hopeless. They wake up late on some days, or forget to do this or that. They pull a long face, or give them cannot be bothered attitude. Wah, this kind of helper will really piss off all employers, especially after they come back from a long (and mostly, rough) day at work.

Action: This is mostly a behavioural problem. Something must be bothering them, and most of the time, it has something to do with their personal life. Let’s face it; it is normal for everyone to bring their baggage from their personal life to work. Your helper might be missing her kids or spouse, or err… her super hunky Bangla boyfriend in Singapore. Either way, you must take the effort to find out. Ask them what can be done to help her. If she needs that phone call to make her feel better, let her make that phone call. (Go ask her to buy that prepaid card first, beforehand. LOL) In my case, we hold on to the helpers’ cellphones and prepaid cards. So whenever they feel like calling, we will let them do so, in our presence. Why, my mum even talks to their family members in an effort to get to know them better!

DO-3

Description: They work excellently at tasks they like. If they do not like a certain task, they will work miserably. For instance, you ask them to cook a certain dish which they are not familiar with. Or you ask them to cook when they do not exactly have an experience in cooking. The dish turns out almost inedible to eat, as a result. Whose fault?

Action: This can either be a behavioral problem, or mainly about performance. If they lack the skills to cook, then obviously training and coaching may be the answer. But if they cannot cook nice dishes for you simply because they HATE cooking, then the problem is behavioural. You might end up being the helper in the kitchen instead, if eating good food is of importance to you and your family.

 DO-4

Description: They never complete a task professionally. They will ALWAYS leave something unfinished, hoping that you will never notice.

Action: This is mainly about their behaviour. I think that kind of helper is usually a result of working employers who are rarely there at home. This kind of helper knows that the employer will rarely check on them because they are usually too tired for anything by the time they reach home from work. And this kind of helper is most probably already used to shaking both legs instead of doing chores when her employers are not home. So what choice do you have as an employer for this good-for-nothing helper? I mean, if she keeps leaving chores undone, despite the feedback given by you. They will have to either improve their behaviour, or find another employer, so to speak. After all, you are paying them on a monthly basis regardless of the quality of work they are giving you. Owning a helper is definitely not cheap these days, so I totally understand.

DO-5

Description: Helpers like this are usually lazy, negative, and show little concern to everyone and everything in the house. Usually helpers like this expect a certain standard when it comes to the employer they work for, and will keep giving this heck-care attitude until they like who they are working for. Yup, in this case, the helper chooses the best employer instead of the employer choosing the best helper. They possess a high error rate but at the same time, they know exactly what they are entitled to, and make sure they receive all entitlements.

Action: Come on, do you seriously still need me to tell you what to do in this case? Show her where  the exit is. Maybe she will enjoy being a transfer maid all her life, instead.

SO YEAH.

At the end of the day, I like to believe that the kind of helper we get really depends on luck, and the kind of employer we are to them. If we are lucky, we will get the good ones who are really serious about working. Treat them like dogs, and they will really behave like dogs. Treat them with respect, and you can expect the same from them. We may not realize it sometimes, but our kids really take our lead. If you want your kids to be respectful to everyone around them, you really have to start from the basics; teach them how to be respectful to the helper. No shouting, no beating, no authoritative behaviour.  Of course, this is usually easier said than done. But I didn’t say it is impossible either.

Tell your kids off on the spot if they are rude to the helper. Sorry to say this, but they do not have the god-given right to be rude towards helpers. What kind of adult do you want them to grow up into? I have seen so many kids shouting and yelling at their helpers while their parents just look, see, watch and admire. YIKES?

The helper is human, isn’t she? Most of the time, we fail to realize that she too has feelings, and she is far away from her family. Just imagine yourself being far away from your kids and spouse for two years with minimal means of contact.  Can you handle that? Wouldn’t it be more bearable if you were to have an employer who welcomes you and treats you like a family?

I mean, how can you entrust your kids, food and house to your helper when you know that you spend 99% of the time reprimanding or belittling them?

I KNOW, I KNOW. SOMETIMES, WE CANNOT HELP IT BUT TO LOSE OUR TEMPER ON THE HELPER.  I ADMIT, MY HELPERS DO GET ON MY NERVES TOO.

But I am glad to say that no matter how badly I tell my helpers off sometimes, I will always be able to joke with them when I cool down like five minutes later. And they are also able to laugh and joke with me despite being reprimanded like minutes ago. So no hard feelings or vengeance, at the end of the day. And I think that is really a healthy relationship we have established with the helpers.

We can even ask them to dress up like this and pose!

Or they can even sleep in the car, and on my mum’s shoulder. Right after this picture was taken, Aton actually rested her head on my dad’s shoulder without her noticing it! My dad panicked and shouted, “OI ATON! GILA YA KAMU?!” (Read: “Oi Aton, you crazy ah?!)

LOL.

In my big family, it’s all about the jokes and laughter.

Oh, this reminds me. There was once where I put up a picture of our helpers together with Nurul’s and Norfasarie’s sitting on the floor for their dinner. Our intention was only this; we wanted them to eat together and get to know each other better. But of course, someone commented that we ill-treated the helpers, just  because they had to sit on the floor. Wow. That person sure thought that he/she knew it all. She must have lived with us under the same roof all along, without me noticing her. So invisible, huh?

SITTING ON THE FLOOR IS NOT EQUAL TO MISTREATMENT.

WHY WHY WHYYYYY ADOPT A SHALLOW WAY OF THINKING?

When we have kenduri or get-together sessions, doesn’t everyone sit on the floor?

And what about those days when me and my big family sit on the floor to enjoy our dinner? Are we voluntarily ill-treating ourselves too? How come nobody commented on that when I put up the pictures of all of us breaking fast on the floor at my bro’s place? Were Sofian and Nurul ill-treating all of us? How come we didn’t notice that? I will spank both of them the next time I see them. 😀

No use explaining actually, because I can never control what others think, no matter how ridiculous their mindset can be at times.

And this I strongly believe in;

“SILENCE SPEAKS VOLUMES.”

Anywayyyyy.

Besides being lucky and a good employer to your helper, a good maid agency will come in handy too, don’t you think? How exactly will you know whether a maid agency is reliable or not? Well, based on my experience again, a good maid agency is one that is prompt and efficient, and recommends you helpers based on your requirements.

So many of you have been asking me to recommend the maid agency, so okay, I am going to do just that this time round. Please do not forget to thank me. 😀

The big boss of TAQUA EMPLOYMENT AGENCY PTE LTD (LIC NO. 13C6528) is Fadzline. Want to know how I got to know her? She was previously working in the maid agency where I got Aton (my helper).  She was the one who recommended Aton, in fact. So when she opened her new agency, we decided to get the second helper, Ana, from her! Again, we chose Ana strictly based on Fadzline’s recommendation. No regrets at all, yet again!
