What does it take to win the prestigious Princess Royal Training Award? Ask the Pret Academy team and they’ll tell you it takes a passionate team dedicated to understanding the needs of all employees and providing a learning academy that supports them all to grow. And with measurable business impact to prove it, it’s no wonder their pride is palpable.
Watch the video to hear all about it.

Introduction

Global retail food brand Pret a Manger prides itself on creating a workplace where everyone can truly grow and thrive. At the heart of everything they do is the Pret Academy. With its blend of face-to-face and online learning, created in Elucidat, the Academy supports employees at every level to achieve great things.

So great, in fact, it won the prestigious Princess Royal Training Award in 2023. From increased employee engagement and retention to improved customer experience and sales, the Academy has delivered measurable results that any learning team would be overjoyed with. We wanted to find out all about it.

Daksha Stancilas Talent & Development Partner, Pret

When I got the email. I was like, ‘Oh my god!’ I was literally over the moon. I shared it with all of our senior stakeholders, with the team, and was really ecstatic to get the award.”

Daksha Stancilas

Talent & Development Partner

What did Pret win the award for?

Packed full of learning, the award-winning Pret Academy supports the development of knowledge and skills that every Pret employee across the globe needs to progress in their career. It does this through three key elements:

  • Library: A knowledge bank of resources that is easily searchable to meet an immediate learning need.
  • Curriculums: Blended learning journeys using a combination of face-to-face workshops, elearning created with Elucidat, and on-the-job activity.
  • Community: A forum for colleagues to interact and share best practice.

Over five years, the Academy has delivered a tangible positive impact on the business, from engagement rates to turnovers, to KPIs like sales quotas. And it’s this impact that the prestigious Princess Royal Training Award has recognized.

David Catoni, Pret

The Academy has a tremendous positive impact. We have seen an improvement in the engagement rate … in turnovers … in our KPIs. Our sales quota has improved throughout the years, and so has the customer experience. ”

David Catoni

Head of Operations

What part did Elucidat play?

As a key part of the blend, The Academy’s digital learning had to be engaging, up-to-date and inclusive. The in-house team at Pret used Elucidat to create and deliver elearning for employees across all roles and throughout Europefrom 2000+ leaders and managers to around 100 apprentices.

They used templates to help make this process seamless,  those that come with Elucidat as well as creating their own. And since they are a global company, they used the translation features to provide content in multi-languages.

Collaboration was also key. The partner teams needed to be able to take and adapt the elearning easily; the designers needed to be able to work closely and efficiently with subject matter experts. They all had access to see and review the modules.

What did they have to do to achieve the award?

During the award submission process, the Learning & Development team and learners were interviewed about the Academy’s design and impact. They had to provide evidence in three areas:

  • Business strategy: What did the training set out to achieve, and how did it meet business needs?
  • Learning delivery: How efficient and scalable was the model for learning delivery?
  • Impact: Did it have the impact it set out to achieve, and what is the evidence that backs that up?

Daskha Stancilas, the Talent & Development Partner at Pret, who led the award application, pulled together data from Elucidat analytics and their LMS around learning numbers and completions and combined it with KPI data to demonstrate the impact. This included how the shops met their revenue targets, the safety visit scores, the mystery shopper KPIs, and more. The evidence collected showed clear, positive trends.

Their dedication to driving real results and tracking those key measures tirelessly enabled them to not only apply but win.

Najiba Mehmet, Pret

The analytics and reporting function allow us to analyze the effectiveness of our learning. Which is great because we don’t just measure business performance, we also measure the learning performance.”

Najiba Mehmet

Learning & Development Manager

What the future holds

Now the impact the Academy is having is clear, Pret is looking to take their learning to the next level.

Luciano Di Pace, the UK Senior Talent & Development Manager, Pret a Manger, can see a future where learning is much more personalized, bite-size and much more accessible. If employees want to refresh their learning about a particular topic, they can do so on any device, there and then.

In summary

Providing impactful learning that touches and supports every employee is the dream of any L&D team. The Pret team set a precedent in the way they measure and prove the business impact of what they do. But, of course, the Academy wouldn’t have the desired impact if it weren’t for their dedication to employee needs and good learning design.  The Academy Team won an award because of:

  • Recognizing the power of a blend: From online to on-the-job, the Pret Academy makes use of a variety of learning resources and approaches to meet the broad needs of a diverse group of learners.
  • Uplifting the online learning experience: Using Elucidat, they’ve created engaging, up-to-date, and inclusive online learning that complements their other learning resources.
  • Measuring their impact: By setting out with clear objectives, the Talent & Development team was able to identify and track key measures that demonstrate the real-world impact of the Pret Academy.

If there’s one thing to say about Global luxury fashion brand, Max Mara, it’s that they set high standards when it comes to creativity and branding. And this also goes for their elearning. With Elucidat, they have an authoring tool that enables them to meet their mark. Delivering multi-brand elearning for 10,000+ learners in their own language – all with that innovative flair.

Learners

Introduction

For one of the world’s most prestigious fashion houses, Italian-brand Max Mara, top quality output is a passion that runs deep. This goes for their clothing, where they specialize in beautiful, up-market, and ready-to-wear fashion. But it also goes for their internal training. Creativity and individuality count just as much in their elearning, as they do elsewhere.

Max Mara has over 2,500 stores in 105 countries, and since 2018 they have used Elucidat to deliver high-end, fully on-brand elearning. They strive for creative, modern, visually-appealing learning content but also encourage their team to inject individuality into their designs. Like their fashion brand, their designs never stand still.

Find out how they create multi-brand, multi-language elearning to 10,000+ learners all over the globe, including those accessing elearning on their mobiles.

Beatrice Cocchi

Because Elucidat is easy to use and gives you the chance to develop your creativity, each member of the team is using Elucidat in their own way. Elucidat is helping to make our ideas a reality.”

Beatrice Cocchi

Corporate HRM Learning Specialist, Max Mara

Encouraging creativity and innovation

Beatrice believes having a creative elearning team around her is vital, but also the right tools that allow for exploration. When it comes to bringing new authors onboard, Beatrice shares inspirational elearning examples and templates they have created in Elucidat, and then gives them the freedom to run with their designs.

“We are innovating. We are not running on the same path again and again.” – Beatrice Cocchi

Elucidat’s ease of use helps Beatrice to onboard new authors quickly, but her top tip is to hire creative people. When you combine creativity with a platform that allows for innovation and personality, the results will shine.

Creating high quality microlearning

As a retail brand, creating short courses that are visually appealing, engaging and memorable is important for Max Mara. With a large proportion of employees working on the shop floor, creating mobile-friendly microlearning with clean and clear learning design is vital. So responsive and adaptive technologies like Elucidat count for a lot.

Imagery and videos are very much at the heart of Beatrice and her team’s designs. Using images and videos allows Max Mara’s employees to learn content efficiently – especially where the content is talking about products where they need to be seen to make sense.

“When you’re talking about retail and fashion, images tell a thousand words.” – Beatrice Cocchi

Reviewing their approach and learning content

And just like how the fashion world moves fast, Max Mara’s digital learning does too. Going even shorter, using even less words, and refining their mobile design approach further is top of the list for the future. They know this from gathering feedback from employees and stakeholders through regular surveys, plus keeping an eye on the trends (of course) for digital learning.

Quality checks also come from within, and with a vast amount of product-specific content being created, reviews from subject experts is a vital part of their process.

“The review mode for the SMEs is great, Elucidat has done a great job. A big achievement is that SMEs can add comments easily to help review learning content.” – Beatrice Cocchi

Serving their sub-brands, in local languages

To keep in line with their exquisite designs and clothing pieces, Max Mara creates beautiful and aesthetically appealing elearning. But since aesthetics is key to what they do, they also need to be able to deliver elearning to their 10 brands in their brand styling. This, Beatrice finds, is not a problem with the built-in re-styling option.

These variations are just part of the story, as the team then also translate their courses into 10 languages, meaning they are able to serve their global audience not only with the right visuals, but in their local language.

“It’s really easy to change the color, change the font. Use a template, duplicate and change.” – Beatrice Cocchi

Beatrice Cocchi

I think that the proudest achievement I can talk about is the fact that every person on the team that works with Elucidat is completely autonomous”

Beatrice Cocchi

Corporate HRM Learning Specialist, Max Mara

Max-imising quality, everywhere

Overall, Max Mara have found a way to live their brand values of creativity, innovation, and aesthetics, through their elearning production, to produce elegant learning solutions that meet the needs of employees in all their stores, around the world, in their language.

Quality is what counts most of all to this high-end fashion brand, and to Beatrice and her team, and quality is what they are creating.

In Summary

Using Elucidat, Max Mara have proven the case that you can achieve high-end, fully on-brand elearning, fit for fashion houses. Other learnings from this story?

  • Multi-brand: Using Elucidat’s Brand Style controls, Max Mara can output their elearning not only so it’s fully on-brand, but in multiple brand styles.

Introduction

With more than 17,000 employees, across 600 offices, in over 42 countries, Aramex has rapidly grown to become a global leader in transportation and logistics. To keep up with the pace of change and deliver the right learning, at the right time to thousands of employees across the world, they needed to take their digital transformation to the next level. And that required a new tool and approach.

We spoke to Roxane Deschambault, Global Director of Learning & Development, to find out how her team are changing their organization’s learning culture by producing engaging digital learning at speed and scale.

Elucidat is really allowing us to deliver those learning bites that match the operations and the reality of the people”

Roxane Deschambault

Global Director of Learning and Development

What were Aramex’s learning goals?

Roxanne and her team set out on this digital learning transformation with three key ambitions. The aim was to:

  • Build skills that empower the business to develop their own digital learning in-house.
  • Uplift the learner experience to deliver improved engagement and impact.
  • Increase agility to respond to changing business needs at speed.

“Elucidat has allowed us to partner at the right time to really deliver projects that are necessary for the business. So those three goals were extremely important for us, and we have succeeded in all of them.”

Why Elucidat?

When we asked Roxanne why they chose Elucidat, she shared three key features that shone out as ways to meet their goals.

  • Easy to use: Elucidat helped reduce the learning curve for team members who were new to digital learning design.

“I’ve experienced the platform myself at the start of our journey, and I would say that – from the moment you log in to the platform – it’s very intuitive.”

  • Cloud-based: Building, reviewing and updating all in one place made collaboration easier, and content creation and updates quicker.

“We’re constantly changing. And the fact that Elucidat is cloud-based allows us to quickly go on the platform and make changes without going through a whole release process.”

  • Easy translations: Quick and simple translation into a wide range of languages using Variations Manager opened up digital learning to a bigger global audience.
Roxane Deschambault

Elucidat has been incredible for us because it has helped us reduce the time we spend on translation, but also being able to translate in languages that we were not able to, before.”

Roxane Deschambault

Global Director of Learning and Development

What’s been achieved so far?

One year into their journey with Elucidat, Amarex is already seeing the far-reaching benefits of their new tool and approach.

  • Empowered L&D team
With a range of levels of experience within L&D, this was a real opportunity for Roxanne’s team to enhance their skills. They embraced the opportunity to become elearning authors  in Elucidat, and have grown stronger as learning designers as a result.

“When you look at the modules they’ve created in this last year, you can see the pride and that they’re stronger as L&D professionals.”

  • Improved learner experience
With an intuitive authoring tool, the team were able to focus on what really matters: the learner experience. They’ve moved from time consuming, content heavy compliance courses to short interactive elearning modules that can be accessed at the point of need.

“The learner is much more engaged in the learning experience”

  • Increased business impact
Being able to pick up the tool and produce short impactful digital learning at speed and scale is already delivering results. It allowed the team to respond to critical needs in the business more easily, and as a result, the perception of digital learning has shifted within the business.

“We’ve been able to demonstrate how impactful a short 5-10 minute module can be, compared to a 30 minutes face-to-face classroom training. We’ve been able to support critical projects for the business, and deliver learning that was really in line with some key business goals. That’s important.”

Roxane Deschambault

L&D is now seen as a business partner for the organization. It’s changed the perception of our key stakeholders and learners in the business. Now we see a lot of different functional heads and Subject Matter Experts approaching us for various projects on sustainability, diversity, leadership, products. So, the future looks very busy for us!”

Roxane Deschambault

Global Director of Learning and Development

In summary

Within one year of using Elucidat, Aramex have transformed how they approach developing digital learning by:

  • Empowering the team: By upskilling the L&D team with Elucidat, they’re able to better meet the needs of the business and learners at speed and scale.

  • Demonstrating their value: By showing the impact that these new modules had in the organization, they’ve transformed the perception of digital learning and have the business queuing up for more.

With Elucidat at their fingertips, this global brow-beating beauty brand not only sculpted a world-class experience for their employees, leading to a staggering 145% increase in monthly learner visits, but also carved out substantial savings. It’s an eyebrow raising tale of innovation; and genuine learning curves.

Introduction

Global beauty brand Benefit Cosmetics have been magically transforming brows since 1976. As worldwide leaders in all things eyebrows, and with upwards of 30 brow-based products plus a range of counter services, Benefit keep standards high by educating those working with their products and services.

But they needed a change in tact. Their product training was high end, but delivered as presentations. They needed a way to get it into the hands of busy front-line staff spread across 50 countries more easily and track engagement. But having never created elearning before, where to start?

Since starting to use Elucidat in 2017, Benefit has not only unleashed their global learning presence with interactive, high-end elearning, but increased take-up and built greater in-house knowledge and control of their content. All while realising an estimated 69% saving on the costs of an LMS.

Courtney

The platform has allowed us to fully customize the program for each country and grow participation”

Cortney Freshwater

Senior Manager – Global Education

A new solution was needed

The Global Education team devised the Benefit Brow Program in 2016, for those working with and for Benefit. They produced a comprehensive training presentation, covering eyebrow trends through the years, creating the perfect brow and how to use their products. The challenge then became how to get this content in front of learners.

Benefit has a presence in 50 countries and counting. Their learners can be in dedicated stores, on counters or third-party staff working in concessions. Many are on shop floors wowing their customers with the latest brow trends and tips, so need to be able to access any learning content quickly via tablets or mobile devices.

The traditional LMS approach was neither cost-effective, nor manageable, for the relatively small Global Learning team. This is because many of their learners are third-party staff members, and enrolling them into an LMS would be at cost to Benefit; plus the potential number who would need access is in the thousands. Benefit needed a responsive, online option that was as easy as a presentation to distribute and access, but which also provided data insights they could track and share with global, and sometimes external, teams.

Hello Elucidat, hello savings!

Elucidat was a perfect fit. The platform’s direct link sharing and in-built analytics mean that Benefit’s learning content can be accessed with just one click, no matter where the learner is or which device they use. Plus, the Benefit Global Learning team are able to monitor who makes progress and where.

Using the platform’s Your Data feature means the team can access not only pass/fail rates, but identify specific learners who have entered into the course, their retail location and everything they have attempted. Then, via a simple export, the team are able to provide local markets with their specific data.

For Benefit, this has resulted in confidence that their audience have been educated; provided insights into any areas that need more attention and delivered definitive knowledge of which team members from which stores have participated.

Overall, the ability to directly share links to learning content and use Elucidat’s powerful analytics saved an estimated 69% (around $75,000) in LMS costs across the length of their contract to date.

Growing the impact

Benefit Cosmetics wanted more than to just get learning content out there. This was about crafting excellence and tweezing out imperfections.

They coupled their subscription with some Elucidat sparkle via the Learning Consultancy Team.  They worked with our expert consultants to build out a series of fully branded elearning templates, that not only captured the right look and feel, but also the brand voice. But of course, they didn’t stop there.

Through their use of Elucidat’s Analytics, the Benefit learning team gained useable insights into learner engagement. They upped their approach, and again with assistance from the Learning Consultancy Team, reimagined their elearning and explored more of the platform’s capabilities. Now their elearning sets learners fun challenges, using badges and other gamified approaches, to increase learner engagement further.

The result? A doubling of monthly visits, meaning more people on the front line undertaking this valuable training, which boosts customer service and sales.

In summary

The Global Learning team at Benefit can certainly take a brow. With no experience in creating interactive elearning, they moved from creating training presentations, to planning, building and implementing top quality, incredibly branded elearning that grew it’s audience two-fold. The Brow Program success also helped Benefit to branch their use of Elucidat into additional global learning initiatives.

  • Novice authors: Partnering with Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy Team helped Benefit get off to a flying start with bespoke templates and advice
  • Analytics: Through Elucidat’s in-built Analytics the Benefit team learnt vital lessons that helped them improve their offering further, and track engagement
  • Branding: Using Elucidat’s Brand Style controls and designing bespoke templates, Benefit’s fantastic branding shone through and connected with people

If you’re looking for a story of successful high-scale, SME-driven elearning creation, then this is the one for you! Sports giant Decathlon believes that every employee should have the freedom to take learning into their own hands and shape their own career path. So when Decathlon’s learning leaders decided the best way to ensure employees could get access to relevant, localized learning was to embrace an employee-generated learning model, they needed some smart technologies to help them. Partnering with Xperteam-Easy and Elucidat they entered a journey into SME generated elearning, and soon had 1000 users creating over 4,000 courses in a year.

Introduction

As the world’s largest sporting goods retailer, Decathlon has enabled countless customers to achieve their sporting goals. And they take the same approach with their people. Every Decathlon employee is empowered to take ownership of their own development and, ultimately, career success.

But to truly honour this, learning needs to be available, relevant, localized, and up to date.

Find out how Sophie Vanhems, Leader of pedagogical skills, and Arnaud Loison, Leader of Sports skills, at Decathlon empowered 1000 employees from around the globe to produce quality digital learning at speed and scale, to honour their ethos.

Sophie Vanhems

Our end goal is not to create experts but for our [1000] authors to be autonomous in creating elearning content through Elucidat to enable upskilling”

Sophie Vanhems

Skill Leader, Decathlon

The challenge – how to create relevant learning, for all?

With employees working across the globe, Sophie and Arnaud knew creating consistent high quality and effective autonomous learning was going to be a challenge. Training needed to be easily understood and relevant – for teammates in different countries, sectors, sports and branches. Rather than being dictated by the business, it had to inspire employees from the ground up.

“The challenge is to make training courses available world-wide. They are the lever of individual competences and therefore our collective competences – they help us reach our objectives in terms of human and financial performance. It’s vital our courses are accessible, simple, engaging and fun. In that sense, we see our approach to using, sharing and spreading L&D as a key step in our company performance. But it always needs to be one step ahead.” – Sophie Vanhems

The solution – platforms that empower local experts

It was clear to Sophie and Arnaud that going digital offered the flexibility they needed for successful learning at scale. But this was only the start of a solution. From identifying training needs to content creation, they needed a platform and approach that gave employees the lead in production.

By partnering with Xperteam-Easy and using the Elucidat authoring platform, they could begin to develop a learning ecosystem built on autonomous development and with employees at its center.

Starting small with an inner circle of content creators, Sophie and Arnaud quickly opened up elearning production more widely. Supported by some simple onboarding and online academy guidance, content creators were given full autonomy. With easy course duplication, rebranding, localization and translation, they weren’t starting from scratch.

Sophie Vanhems

The main benefit of our learning tools choice is the autonomy given to the content authors, who are free to create their content, in line with our vision. Each sport or each sector can then personalize its projects with its own visual identity; each country can localize what it wants according to its specificities without having to recreate everything.”

Sophie Vanhems

Skill Leader, Decathlon

Decathlon staff looking happy

The outcome – a global network of authors

In no time, they’d grown a global community that was producing training and sharing best practice. In just one year, Decathlon had over 1,000 users across 41 countries producing nearly 5,000 elearning courses. These are accessible to over 90,000 learners.

The team are continuing to inspire existing content creators to push development further. What’s more, work on Decathlon’s skills development project is attracting new employees. It seems the sky’s the limit!

In summary

Collaborative learning production models or employee generated learning, is a growing trend. As organisations like Decathlon are faced with the challenge to keep up with the demand for relevant learning and continuous up-skilling, it makes sense to empower specific and local experts to take the lead.

  • Novice authors: Opting for a collaborative elearning authoring platform like Elucidat empowers anyone to create impactful elearning, and at high scale!
  • Easy translation: Translation processes means that courses in Elucidat can be easily switched into other languages, to meet local needs
  • Variations: Authoring Platforms that make switching branding, language and localizing content easy are vital for global organisations

Europe | Nonprofit

The National Trust is a charitable organization dedicated to preserving the nation’s heritage. With an aim to reach net zero by 2030, the learning team identified climate literacy among its people as crucial to achieving that. With Elucidat, the National Trust has created a dynamic elearning solution that not only educates but inspires climate action across its entire workforce.

Introduction

With more than 70,000 learners, the National Trust is Europe’s biggest conservation charity. Tackling climate change to help people and nature thrive sits top of its agenda. But it can feel overwhelming.

Partnering with the Elucidat Learning Consultancy team, the National Trust embarked on a journey to remove trepidation, and instead bring accessible, engaging, and inspiring climate change learning to its staff and volunteers, everywhere.

We spoke to Jenny Harwood, Organizational Development Manager, and Julie Kelso, Development Specialist, to learn more.

Jenny Harwood

What I particularly like about the elearning that’s been created is it feels different, it feels very engaging. I like the fact that we’ve created something that we’re trying to inspire people with, which in an elearning platform is a real challenge.”

Jenny Harwood

Organizational Development Manager

What were the National Trust’s learning goals?

  • Educate staff and volunteers on climate literacy
  • Reassure everyone that they can play a key role in addressing climate change
  • Engage learners by transforming a daunting topic into an interactive experience

The National Trust partnered with Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy team to design an elearning course that everyone was proud of.

Julie Kelso

We were very clear on what we hoped to achieve, which made collaboration with Elucidat so much smoother. They really helped us think through the look and feel of the course, ensuring it would resonate with our audience.”

Julie Kelso

Development Specialist

The value of Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy

After the National Trust’s subject matter experts had agreed the content for the elearning itself, it was the job of Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy team to come up trumps and design an elearning course that delivered this in a fresh, engaging way.

The Learning Consultancy team:

  •  Came up with an eye catching, branded look and feel for the elearning
  •  Set out a suggested structure for the content with reflective questions and interactions that added value and encouraged engagement
  •  Reviewed and fine-tuned the content with the National Trust team so it met its objectives, and deadlines.
Jenny Harwood

We’ve had fantastic feedback. People love that it’s practical, clear, and engaging. We used videos, polls, and internal case studies to bring the topic to life, and that’s resonated with everyone, no matter their role.”

Jenny Harwood

Organizational Development Manager

Outcomes so far

The elearning has already become a key part of the National Trust’s climate strategy.  It has provided a complementary tool kit and conversation starter that teams can use and is being rolled out organization wide.

Already, this is being implemented as pre-learning for the National Trust’s leadership programme.

Summary

Partnering with Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy experts, the National Trust has transformed climate literacy training into an engaging and inspiring experience. By empowering its workforce to understand and act on climate issues, it has built a team that – from top to bottom – is ready to make a difference. The National Trust is now one step closer to achieving its net zero ambitions.

This is a story of relatively small beginnings, that has led to 200+ employees embracing elearning authoring for themselves. It began with a common challenge: how a Talent Development team of two can roll out new technical process training to thosands of employees in labs around the world? The answer: go for a collaborative learning platform that can truly partner with you. Elucidat and it’s Learning Consultants helped build confidence and competence in elearning design, that evolved into a self-sustaining global authoring community producing essential training for an organisation where quality really matters.

Introduction

SGS is the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. They’re one of the largest too, with more than 89,000 employees and a network of more than 2,600 offices and laboratories around the world.

As part of their commitment to quality, SGS continually improve the processes used in their laboratories, led by a select group of technical experts. The story began with a question – how to get those important process changes rolled out effectively to remote employees, and at the speed of need?

Find out how their partnership with Elucidat alleviated pressure on their learning department – building confidence in the group of technical experts to create great elearning for themselves. From there? Fast forward to a global authoring community of 200+ in-house authors. SGS is a success story of an organization with super-high standards producing effective in-house training at scale.

Partnering with Elucidat experts was the best investment SGS could make. It allowed our team to discover the “digital learning designers” in them. The partnership allowed them to create and deliver with speed and increased their confidence to create the next batch of modules. Thank you Elucidat!”

The Challenge – A Need to Keep Up

How do you get a team of 10 experts in process management to update thosands of employees on important process changes, effectively and regularly?

This is where the SGS and Elucidat story began when it became clear that scalable elearning was the answer. They needed an authoring platform that was easy to use and easy to update.

But the SGS L&D team wanted to empower the technical experts to create quality elearning for themselves, especially since the processes they oversee change regularly. Being total novices in online learning design, the question was – how to set them up for success. Sometimes it takes a little more than a platform.

And so began their partnership with Elucidat and the Learning Consultancy Team…

The Solution – Enablement from Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy Team

With years of cutting-edge experience in elearning design and best practice, it made sense for SGS to partner with Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy Team to design a Tailored Template that could be easily used by the subject experts.

This gave the technical experts at SGS a pre-built template designed specifically for their technical process content, with expert learning design baked in. All 10 experts used this template; reducing their learning curve, and ensuring all of their elearning projects were consistent and engaging.

“Thank you all for combining your talents and expertise to make this first phase so smooth, speedy and professional. The templates look awesome and you have delivered so quickly. I will be pleased to share with the team today.”

As a follow-up, the Elucidat team then carried out Project Reviews on the first draft of each of the 10 experts’ projects. These 1-2-1 reviews meant each expert received specific support for their content and confidence level, and also enabled both parties to ensure quality and consistency across the board.

The SGS team were highly satisfied with the detailed feedback, proposed alternatives and expert guidance offered by the Elucidat team, both from an instructional design perspective as well as from a technical one, always keeping the learner at the center.”

The Outcome – A Thriving in-house Authoring Community

In just 7 weeks the SGS team had 10 professional, consistent elearning modules ready for user acceptance testing. And the effects were wider-reaching than just this project. The 10 technical experts were confident, ready to move on to creating the next set of modules in their process training curriculum. They have built their skills to a level where they are now able to peer review work and share best practice to support each other, creating an evolving author community.

Fast forward four years, and SGS have a thriving elearning authoring community of around 250 authors. Their designs and template suites have, of course, evolved and many SGS teams around the world now produce elearning themselves, for a range of essential needs.

In Summary

To meet essential training needs, SGS embarked across a model that is now trending across many global organizations: collaborative, ground-up authoring where in-house experts create elearning directly. But, they made sure they put quality standards in place from the off  through Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy Team.

  • Upfront training: Partnering with Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy Team meant the team set off their journey with standards and know-how
  • Templates: Investing in ready-made elearning templates is a sensible step for high-scale production – SGS opted to create bespoke ones
  • Novice author community: SGS now has a thriving community of 250 authors, across multiple teams, creating essential elearning. Anyone can do it!

Global | Retail

With a goal to produce five million hours of learning across five separate banner brands, the L&D team at Kingfisher plc needed an efficient way to produce online learning at seriously high scale. Jason Edwards, Global Digital Learning and Development Partner, shares how Elucidat helped them meet their goal to produce multi-brand employee learning efficiently. Saving costs and upping engagement as they went.

Introduction

Kingfisher plc is home to five home improvement retail brands across Europe. With over 2,000 stores, and 80,000 employees, they need learning that can translate across their banner brands, roles and locations. But they also need to address the quality challenge and increase learner engagement, through more relevant and adaptable learning solutions.

Add to the mix a requirement to make five million hours of learning consumable at point of need, within five years, it’s not easy to see how the central L&D team can deliver. But deliver they do!

Jason Edwards, Global Digital Learning and Development Partner at Kingfisher, tells us about how Elucidat’s cloud-based authoring platform – and supporting services – have been key to their model, and driven a transformational impact on the business.

“The ease of authoring, functionality and interactions made working at the scale we needed much quicker and easier. Additionally, it was Elucidat’s values and business ethos that shone out. They were human. They brought a partnership””

The Challenge – A Need for Global Consistency

Up until mid 2019, Kingfisher’s L&D function had two dedicated members of staff, and each brand (B&Q, Screwfix, Castorama, Brico Dépôt and Koçtaş) had its own learning creation platform – or in some cases, didn’t!

Outside of this they used an external supplier to produce large elearning projects, where costs would regularly creep. There was little sharing or communication between the different business units when it came to what their online training looked like and sharing of best practice.

The learning that they did have was text-heavy and – in the words of some learners – boring and dull”.

It was linear, time-consuming… the feedback was poor, and engagement levels were low.” – Jason Edwards

In the second half of 2019, Kingfisher introduced its Skills for Life strategy and the five million hours goal was set at the Group level.

The team and their remit was expanded. This central team would be responsible for the OEB product training, compliance and leadership learning throughout the banner brands. The content would need to serve multiple purposes, while being more suited to the audiences – like shop-floor staff – who would be undertaking it.

It became apparent that the current multiple tools and external elearning provision wouldn’t be able to support a team that would need to sit at the center of multiple business units.

So, they started the journey to look for something new.

The Solution – An Elucidat Partnership

Kingfisher needed one, flexible authoring tool that would allow multiple areas of the organization to work both independently and together. It needed to give the banners the ability to control their elearning, but also work with the central L&D team to ensure it met with best practice and standards. Enter Elucidat!

Why was Elucidat their first choice of authoring platform?

“The ease of authoring, functionality and interactions made working at the scale we needed much quicker and easier. Additionally, it was Elucidat’s values and business ethos that shone out. They were human. They brought a partnership – a relationship – to the table, much more than a vendor who just sets you up and off you go.” Jason Edwards

And that level of partnership and support continued through the implementation process. With multiple brands under the Kingfisher umbrella, and with the look and feel of elearning coming under critique previously, it was critical to get it right from the start with Elucidat. The Kingfisher team engaged Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy Team to create Brand Styles for each area of the business.

Jason felt that having fully designed and reusable Brand Styles for their elearning was very much worthwhile.

The Outcomes – Cost Savings and Increased Engagement

In just eight months, Jason and the team went from strength to strength with Elucidat.

After the release of their initial courses in January 2019, the improved design had an instant impact. Qualitative feedback from learners was overwhelmingly positive, with their first courses coming out with learner scores of an average of 8 out of 10.

In addition to learner engagement rising, the cost savings from their previous methods of production were very significant.

Previously, each course the team wanted to produce would cost them tens of thousands of pounds when using their external elearning supplier. Now, the only costs outside of their one Elucidat license were for translation (something which can now be automated in the platform). With Elucidat, Kingfisher had reduced their training costs by over 90%!

Plus it’s not just the learners and business who are benefitting.  Jason told us that there used to be a “wall” in the business between L&D and the business units, but that they’re now seeing the individual brands collaborating with each other.

In Summary

Instead of the central team being responsible for production and distribution of elearning across the whole of the group, Elucidat has empowered Kingfisher to distribute the creation of elearning, effect business change and – most importantly – put Learning and Development at the very heart of Kingfisher’s ongoing strategy.

  • Multi-brands: Converting central courses into five separate banner brand-styles was key to Kingfisher, but wasn’t an obstacle with Elucidat
  • Partnership: Enterprise organizations need more than a platform, they need a partner relationship. Learning Consultancy Services are a plus!
  • Collaboration: A cloud-based platform is key for any organisation where there’s multiple stakeholders or business units. Courses can be easily adapted.

US | Travel and Tourism

US vacation rental gurus, Vacasa, need fast, flexible training that keeps their growing employee population up to speed and on their toes. Thanks to Elucidat, they’ve been able to take a data-driven approach to creating flexible, modular elearning that empowers their 2,500 employees to be their best. With a wealth of data at their fingertips that their previous LMS simply couldn’t provide, the only way is up, for their training. As it is for their business!

Introduction

Less than a decade ago, Vacasa was a modest vacation rental company based in the US. A Learning and Development team of two people supported employees with elearning that was created, delivered and managed using an LMS.

Then, the business shot into the stratosphere. Holiday makers all over the US, South America and beyond were choosing Vacasa to make their vacation rentals easy, and the company grew by 16,000%.

The need for fast, flexible training was paramount, and Vacasa needed technologies that could adapt and keep up. There was a mountain to climb and the L&D team needed the right equipment to get over it! Elucidat brought the flex required and the Analytics that enabled them to take their training to its required destinations, and fast.

The analytics tool is a game changer for us. Now, we’re solving problems we didn’t even know we had.”

The Challenge – A Growing, Remote Employee Base

It’s a familiar story. A growing company, a rising demand for training, and a tiny L&D team.

Vacasa sat at the extremes, however. With the company growing 16,000% in just four years, the L&D team of two had rights to feel nervous.

“As you can imagine, two people trying to scale with an inflexible system was less than ideal” – Ben Digman, Learning Experience Design Manager

Vacasa’s employee base was bigger and more varied than ever before. From housekeepers in Oregon to property managers in Mexico and so many more, employees needed high quality, mobile-ready training to enable them to deliver a consistent service around the globe. But how?

The Solution – Elucidat & It’s Analytics

Having identified that content creation was their LMS’s weak spot, Ben went on the hunt for an authoring tool to complement their technology stack.

“Because we needed our elearning modules to be SCORM compliant, we started to explore solutions like Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, and xAPI, but we couldn’t find an elearning developer who was strong enough in instructional design to use those tools”

“We finally found the solution that checked every box: Elucidat. The platform was easy to use and also allowed us to build the quality of courses we expected.”  – Ben Digman

For Ben, discovering Elucidat was a turning point; suddenly, the team was able to deliver SCORM compliant elearning at speed and scale without compromising on the quality of the learning experience. Of course, it’s responsive too so works perfectly on mobiles for busy staff in various locations.

However, the real transformation came when the team at Vacasa began digging into the powerful Analytics Elucidat provides.

I was blown away that Elucidat allowed us to immediately identify problems within our courses we didn’t even know were there.”

The Outcome – Delivering More Impact

With a wealth of data at their fingertips that their previous LMS simply couldn’t provide, Learning Experience Designers were able to measure the impact their elearning was having and make design decisions based on facts rather than hunches.

“I could see that, of the 700 people who had taken a required lesson over the last year, only 10–15% had actually completed it” Ben Digman

This new focus on data fitted perfectly with Vacasa’s design ethos. Truly understanding the problem was already the first step. Analytics meant they could spot where hot fixes and more strategic improvements were needed. And that’s exactly what they set out to do – increase the quality, the take-up and deliver better ROI.

“The analytics tool is a game changer for us. Now, we’re solving problems we didn’t even know we had”

Soon they had achieved 38,000 enrolments in their elearning.

“While I initially saw Elucidat as a supplemental platform, it’s now very much the opposite. Elucidat is now our first choice as a course creation tool. And it’s changing the way we build our instructional design team. We’re hiring people who have years of development experience, and they default to creating with Elucidat”

In Summary

From initially searching for a fast-paced authoring platform that supported mobile-learning, Vacasa soon uncapped Elucidat’s secret weapon: learning analytics.

  • Learning Analytics: They used detailed learner analytics from inside Elucidat, which goes beyond traditional LMS data, to drive up quality and ROI
  • Responsive learning: Vacasa opted for an authoring platform that was responsive so they can deliver mobile-ready learning to their remote workforce, where ever they are.
  • Speed: With a need for speed and a growing workforce, Vacasa needed an authoring platform that could flex and support this

US | Fintech

Struggling to keep pace with training demands and maintain consistency, US fintech giant, nCino, needed a change of approach. When word of mouth led them to Elucidat, they knew they had found a partner that would make this learning development transformation possible. They were soon able to remove the production bottleneck, empower SMEs to author content directly, and standardise their training like never before. From there, the only way is up!

The Lowdown

The Challenge – The L&D Bottleneck

“That disjointed quality, and the amount of legwork to maintain SCORM files, were really the two biggest pain points that drew us towards Elucidat as our new solution.”  – Alex Barley

With stacks of content from across the organization, the management of nCino University was becoming tricky. Elearning maintenance and training requests were building up: minor updates were taking hours. The Global Enablement team were becoming a bottleneck, and this meant they just didn’t have time to maintain standards. Content was inconsistent, it often looked rushed, and sometimes it didn’t even look like it was nCino content.

A smarter solution was needed, that would bring efficiency and standards.

The Solution – Finding Elucidat!

If the University was going to remain a center of excellence, the team needed to enable subject matter experts (SMEs) from across the organization to produce quality learning experiences. They knew what they wanted to achieve, but they didn’t know what to do next. Until someone recommended Elucidat.

“Somebody [at the Docebo Inspire annual conference] just said, ‘hey, have you guys tried Elucidat?’…We didn’t know what we were looking for or the next step to fix those problems. But then we saw that [Elucidat] had rapid release and that we could create and develop wireframes ahead of time. It was almost like our questions had already been answered.”  – Alex Barley

Straight away the team began to feel the benefits from partnering with Elucidat. By setting up templates, with the help of the Elucidat Learning Consultancy Team, and configuring their brand style, they were soon able to produce elearning that established consistent best practice. Further more, they were able to bring in novice authors (Subject Matter Experts or SMEs) to create content directly…

Alex barley ncino

Elucidat solves far more problems than we had initially thought that we would use it for. Which is a really cool thing!”

Alex Barley

Manager of Learning Design

The Outcome – Hello SMEs; Bye Bye Bottleneck

Using Elucidat allowed the team to focus on establishing best practices. From staying on brand to creating effective learning experiences, a selection of ready-to-go wireframe templates and centralized assets meant that content specialists could power-up production and focus on the learning content itself.

“We focus on what we call the 80 percent: the standards, different enablement initiatives, best practices and the way to develop training. And then the [content specialist] team gets to follow those parameters and build content. And due to that, we’ve been able to create a ton of scalable content in a relatively short amount of time.”  – Alex Barley

Rather than just being a source of information, in-house Subject Matter Expects (SMEs) started to create high-quality elearning for themselves. Using the templates Alex set up with Elucidat’s Learning Consultancy Team as part of a streamlined process meant super-fast authoring was possible.

Over a 7 month period, a team of 2 authors was able to develop 70 courses for nCino’s LMS, centered around product-focused training .

“Giving more of the instructional designers and content developers the keys to the tool. Letting them know we’ve set the standard now. Everyone’s up to speed. We review at the very end, but really let them build the wireframe how they want…That is our new frontier.”Alex Barley

Overcoming the bottleneck opened the team up to think outside the box, and take things further.

“Elucidat solves far more problems than we had initially thought that we would use it for. Which is a really cool thing…[For example] we’ve been able to use different releases, specifically the password protected online link for an onboarding checklist…They can basically save [it] in their browser as a bookmarks tab for their first couple of weeks of onboarding. It’s been a surprise benefit of Elucidat.”  – Alex Barley

They are now translating their Elucidat courses and setting the bar higher for what they can achieve.
