Hari Raya with Ribena

Now that Hari Raya is approaching, feasting and fizzy drinks will definitely be on your agenda, yes?

I cannot wait to feast too! After all, this will be my final chance to do so before I give birth and confinement food starts to haunt my life for a while. HAHA.

Speaking of drinks, I think I will instead go for a healthier alternative – something rich in Vitamin C with no artificial flavouring, sweetener nor colouring, and something that can also be used to create various types of simple dishes, dessert and beverages for Hari Raya.

Yes, I am referring to Ribena Cordial.

I simply love making different kinds of beverages using Ribena Cordial for my girls and myself!

For the upcoming Hari Raya, try preparing Ribena Longan & Lime drink your guests!

ribs4

Ingredients:

  • 1 glass of cold water
  • Ribena Cordial to taste (adjust the sweetness accordingly)
  • 3 Lime with juice extracted
  • Longan fruits
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: Sparkling Ribena to taste (for that extra kick!)

How to prepare:

Need you ask? Just add everything together and your Ribena Longan & Lime Drink is ready for your guests, young and old.

Really a refreshing drink, this one! The sweetness of the Ribena Cordial goes really well with the sourness of the lime. And the longan fruits added is definitely a treat for the kids!

My girls had so much fun preparing the drink and each of them added the Ribena Cordial to their drink according to their own personal preference.

ribs1

Who doesn’t love Ribena? It is definitely every kid’s favourite drink.

ribs3

I wouldn’t mind my girls drinking Ribena over and over again during the festive season instead of all those fizzy drinks.

ribs2

The best thing about Ribena is that you can adjust the sweetness level according to your preference. What’s more, Ribena is made with 100% blackcurrants from New Zealand, and does not contain artificial sweetener, flavouring and colour.

Here are two other easy recipes that you can have fun making with your kids this Hari Raya! Refreshing and perfect for the hot weather!

Ribena Berry Nice Smoothie

ribs5

Recipe:

  • 1 Banana
  • 1 cup of chopped strawberries
  • 1 cup of fresh milk
  • Half to one cup of Ribena Cordial (depending on your preference)
  • 1 spoonful of honey (depending on your preference)
  • Ice cubes

How to make? Blend everything together!

Refreshing and cooling!

Fruity Ribena Soda

ribs6

Recipe:

  • 1 Cup chopped strawberries
  • 1 Cup blueberries
  • 1 cup logan
  • 1 cup orange / peach
  • Ribena Cordial to taste
  • Chilled soda drink
  • Ice cubes

Mix everything into your favourite cup (best to use a colourless one to see the pretty colours pop!)

Stir everything and drink.

YUMMYYYYYYYYYY! Enjoy!

Do follow Ribena Singapore in Facebook for more creative recipes using Ribena Cordial!

Here’s wishing all my Muslim followers a Selamat Hari Raya!

#MyMandai Moments

The wildlife parks are a treasure trove of memories for almost every family here in Singapore.

Whenever someone mentions the Singapore Zoo or Jurong Bird Park, I cannot help to recall my early memories and unforgettable moments with my family at these wildlife parks.

One of my best #MyMandai moments was during one of my primary school excursions where I had my photo taken with an orang utan. The very thought of bringing back the polaroid photo to show my parents and siblings made me beam with pride.

Yes, it was a big deal to me back then.

Gosh.

I have been to the zoos many times playing different roles each time – as a daughter, student, preschool teacher, primary school teacher, mummy, and of course, as a proud Singaporean. Indeed, I have had many great #MyMandai moments over the years.

IF ONLY I COULD FIND ALL THE OLD PHOTOS AND SHARE THEM WITH YOU! URGH.

Nobody ever gets sick of the Singapore Zoo. Not me. Not my family. Definitely not my kids.

They went to the zoo when they were still toddlers.

zb3

They went to the zoo with their teachers and friends when they were preschoolers.

zb18zb5

They went to the zoo recently when they are already in primary school!

zb2

zb11

zb14

It’s like, you can never say no to spending quality family time there because there are just so many activities to do and animals to look at.

And it’s especially fun when you get to show off your intelligence once in a while to your kids by telling them things they do not know about the certain species of animals there. And then they will go, “Wahhhhhhhhh!” or “Really Mummy? I didn’t know that!” HAHAH. Kids these days are too smart; we need opportunities to outsmart them sometimes.

Them with the fake crocodile.

zb7

And following picture was taken by Sharleez during her school excursion.

Real crocodile! She went home and showed me this photo ever so proudly! She was like, “Mummy, I took picture of a real crocodile! Can you believe it?” This is definitely Sharleez’s very own #MyMandai moment.

 zb10

It’s very exciting to know that the Mandai area will be rejuvenated into a complete nature destination. I was informed that they are hoping to bring the Bird Park over and add more nature attractions in the Mandai area! The first phase of this rejuvenation will be completed in 2020. This is definitely awesome! Imagine having all the wildlife parks within the same area!

How about you?

What are your #MyMandai moments? Was it a school excursion when you were young, or a recent trip with your family? Well, now you can get rewarded by just sharing your photos. , just by sharing your #MyMandai moment, you will get a S$10 voucher. That’s not all – the most moving entry every week gets S$100 voucher. So go share your photos now at http://www.mymandai.com . I have submitted mine, go check out the website now. I had a great time browsing all the memories from different visitors – some even dated as far back as 1970s! How precious!

ALL THE BEST!

The Sky is the Limit: Creative Writing Workshop:

Every kid can write, in a way or another.
Write an alphabet. Write a word. Write a sentence.
To write creatively is totally something else.

When I was still a teacher, I encountered students who did not want to write in their journal book or composition book because they were too afraid to express themselves. Some could write sentences, but they had difficulties making a story out of those sentences.

Some kids are generally reluctant to write because they do not feel they have anything worthwhile to say.

Encouraging children to write a story of their very own can give them an enormous confidence boost, this is true. And the most effective way to do encourage them is most often by doing it subtly – through play or the arts.

Yesterday, my girls had the opportunity to attend “The Sky is the Limit” Writing Workshop with Claudine.

cl7

Claudine teaches literature full time and she also studied arts in education in Harvard! So she is definitely more than qualified, if that’s what you are asking! Hehe.

But most importantly, Claudine has the characteristics that a a teacher teaching Creative Writing should have!

She is:

1. Patient
2. Encouraging
3. Approachable
4. Attentive
5. Fluent
6. Friendly
7. Creative

My girls enjoyed the workshop because it was basically just fun throughout the 1.5 hours.

First, Claudine let them introduce themselves by writing on their name place card.

cl6

Next, they watched a snippet of Monster Inc. before writing down the answers to questions related to what they watched.

cl3

cl2

Then they had a sharing session and Claudine was always sure to give them praises like “Well done!” or “That’s really creative!”

cl1

Praise the praiseworthy and keep criticism to a minimum indeed. But in Claudine’s case, there was not a single criticism coming from her.

Come on, if we want our kids to love writing then we cannot be quick to criticize them. Being overly critical is most often than not, the quickest way to kill that desire to write or to even try to write.

Claudine used a lot of oral communication to encourage written communication. She talked to the students before encouraging them to write down those ideas in a more organized fashion.

For one of the activities, the students were also asked to think of their most favourite character in the world and describe + draw that character. Anything that involves drawing will definitely get the thumbs up sign from my girls.

But I had to stress to my girls that they did not have to spend so much time on the drawing and just focus more on describing their favourite character.

This is Sharleez’s work.

cl9

For the last activity, they were asked to create their own masked character by painting it.

cl4

After they were done with the painting, they were asked to introduce their masked character by firstly writing about it before talking about it.

cl8

That was the first lesson they had yesterday and it was all good!
For the next lesson, they will be doing even more fun and creative activities related to Creative Writing.

My girls enjoyed the class so much till they asked me,
“Mummy, you mean we can go for the writing class for three times only during the holidays?”

cl5

Not really.

Claudine has her regular writing workshops or classes that she conducts on a weekly basis.

Next year onwards, Claudine will be conducting her writing classes on Saturdays!

For ages 7-9: 10-11.30am
For ages 10-12: 12.30-2pm

Her rates?
$45 per session or $180 per month

A Jolly Seafood Fare: Fish & Co.

Just the other day, I received this really special delivery from Fish & Co.

fishnco9

Why, of course I would want to bring my family for a Christmas meal at Fish & Co.

After all, my girls LOVE Fish & Co. and get so excited at the mere mention of having lunch or dinner there!

And come on, just look at their Christmas specials!

fishncoxmas

I love trying out anything that is available for a limited time period only because I know that it is often a now or never kind of situation.

So we arranged to have lunch at their newly opened Bugis+ outlet right after our Treasure Island play.

fishnco8

(Their Bugis+ branch is soooooooo beautiful, by the way! A birthday party there will be wicked! Heheh.)

First up, our drinks.

fishnco2

Blue Dream, Jazz Me-Up and Double Yellow Line for us!

Mysha and I especially loved the Jazz Me-Up because it has a fine mixture of sweet and sour! Really refreshing to the max, if you ask me.

Grilled White Fish with Ebiko

fishnco5

OH MY GOODNESS, THIS ONE IS REALLY REALLY REAAAAAAALLLY NICE!

What is it basically?

It is Grilled White Fish baked with ebiko roe and mozzarella cheese. We like how the fish is not too cheesy or rich. It’s almost like not eating cheese at all.

We might just substitute the usual Fish &  Chips with this instead for our future Fish & Co. visits, if they have plans to retain this one!

Shrimp & Clam Aglio Olio

fishnco4

If you are an Aglio Olio lover like me, you will definitely like this one too.

And at long last…

We got to feast on this luxurious pot of Seafood goodness!

fishnco3

It is like dipping yourself into a cream mushroom ocean of prawns, clams, mussels, scallops, fish!

REALLY, REALLY GOOD AND SUCH A SATISFYING MEAL!

And how can we leave Fish & Co without their famous Hot Fudge cake?

fishnco6

Thank you Fish & Co. for yet another satisfying meal!

And thank you so much to The Good Folks for making this possible. 🙂

If you would like to try out their Jolly Seafood Fare, you can do so till 3 January 2016!

Treasure Island by SRT

Ahoy mates! How be you?

How about free tickets t’ watch Treaaye Island?

I meant to ask, how about free tickets to watch Treasure Island by SRT’S The Little Company?

Hehe. We went to watch Treasure Island just a week ago at SRT.

srt4

srt3

Come on, it is an open secret by now – WE LOVE SRT/TLC PRODUCTIONS!

Go on, tell everyone.

I will also try to dress the girls up according to the theme whenever possible. 🙂

srt9

srt2

We first started attending their plays in 2012. That was like 3 years ago when Sharleez was 5 and my twins were 3! Ever since then, we have been hooked and have been going to all of their productions! Their plays and musicals are suitable for kids aged 3-12 supposedly but hey, if adults like me and my husband are entertained just as well all the time, then I guess their plays and musicals are suitable for everyone!

srt5

Their current production is Treasure Island.

SRT8

I insist that you must bring your kids to watch this production!

srt11

What is it about?

A new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s popular novel of the same name, Treasure Island follows the adventure of Jim Hawkins, a lion-hearted 13-year-old girl who receives a treasure map from a kooky old seaman. Jim is tasked to help find the hidden treasure, but the road to riches is never smooth sailing.

A swashbuckling, action-packed musical about friendship and trust. This exhilarating show for the entire family will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Source: SRT

Why bring the kids to watch this?

  1. Teaches children the importance of loyalty and friendship, and to practise discernment in those they chose to place their trust in.
  2. This story features a courageous female protagonist who proves that no feat is too great for girls or boys.
  3. Engages the imagination by transporting young children to a foreign land, and expands their world beyond their everyday lives.

We loved the amazingly beautiful sets as usual. SRT never fails to put in so much efforts in their costumes and props, so that is another reason why my girls and I look forward to every production of theirs.

SRT7

Treasure Island has a fine mixture of puppetry, songs, beautiful props and of course, energetic expression by all of their actors.

srt15

The musical itself has a slightly different twist from the original story but you will definitely enjoy it. Every single production of SRT/TLC also has a moral or learning point at the end of it. As we all know it, kids will only be relieved once  the story ends nicely – they will always expect the good to prevail and the bad to be punished or to somehow repent. HAHA.

Want a little preview?

Okay watch this!

LOOKS LIKE FUN, RIGHT?

Treasure Island will reiterate to their young audience (and their not so young audience) on the importance of friendship over anything else.

Human relationship is the real treasure in life.

“Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate.”
